What Gets PE Stamping on a Solar Project

A residential or commercial solar submission in Canada typically needs two separate reviews, and they don’t always come from the same engineer.

Structural review. This covers the racking, attachment points, and roof or ground-mount system itself. The engineer checks the design against wind uplift, snow load, and seismic factors for the specific site — not generic assumptions, since Nunavut snow loads and Victoria wind loads aren’t the same calculation. Provincial building codes govern this piece.

Electrical review. This confirms the system complies with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and, specifically, CSA C22.1 Section 64, which covers the PV-specific clauses around conductor sizing, disconnects, rapid shutdown, and grounding. Each regulator sets its own registration process, and a stamp only carries weight in the province that issued the license behind it. If you’re rolling out installs across two or three provinces, plan on either working with an engineer licensed in each one, or working with a permitting partner who already has that coverage in place — chasing down a second license mid-project is not a same-week fix.
